Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 25
PiTorrent ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how our Android torrent client handles information. The short version: the app works locally on your device — we operate no accounts, no servers that store your data, and no analytics SDKs.
1. Information Stored on Your Device
PiTorrent is a local-first app. The following stays on your device and is never sent to us:
- Torrents you add: magnet links, .torrent files, download progress, and file-selection preferences.
- Settings: download folder, Wi-Fi-only mode, auto-start, DHT / peer-exchange toggles, and custom trackers (Pro).
- Downloaded files: saved directly to the folder you choose (default Download/PiTorrent).
- RSS feeds you add (Pro): feed URLs and cached feed items.
We do NOT collect names, emails, precise location, contacts, or any personal identifiers, and we run no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
2. Torrent Search & RSS
Some features necessarily contact third parties:
- Torrent search: your search keywords are sent to public search providers to fetch results.
- RSS feeds: feed URLs you add are fetched directly from those publishers.
- Trackers, DHT, and peer exchange: to find peers, the client contacts the trackers embedded in a torrent plus public trackers, the DHT network, and other peers — this is how BitTorrent works and cannot function offline.
3. Third-Party Services
- Google Mobile Ads (AdMob): the free version of the app shows ads. AdMob may collect device identifiers and ad-interaction data for ad delivery and measurement. Learn more: policies.google.com/privacy. Upgrading to Pro removes ads.
- Google Play Billing: Pro purchases are processed entirely by Google Play. We never see or handle your payment details; we only store whether Pro is unlocked on your device.
We do not control third-party data practices. We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with data brokers, and we receive no government data requests capable of identifying you — we simply don't have your data.
4. App Permissions
The app requests the following permissions, used solely for app functionality:
- Files & media / storage: to read .torrent files you pick and save downloads (on older Android versions via storage permission; on newer versions via the system folder picker).
- Notifications: download progress, completion, and error alerts.
- Network state & foreground service: to transfer data, honor Wi-Fi-only mode, and keep downloads running in the background.
5. Peer-to-Peer Networking & Your IP Address
BitTorrent is decentralized: to download and upload file pieces, your IP address is visible to other peers in the same swarm, and to the trackers coordinating it. Uploading pieces to peers while you download is inherent to the protocol. This is not controlled by us. If this concerns you, consider using a VPN.
6. Storage, Retention & Deletion
- Active torrents: kept until you remove them from the app.
- Completed downloads: stay in your chosen folder until you delete them; removing a torrent in the app never deletes your files.
- Settings & history: kept until you clear app data.
Your controls: remove any torrent anytime, and use Settings > Clear Cache to wipe temporary app data.
7. Children
PiTorrent is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, contact us and we will advise on removing any locally stored data.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with a revised "Last updated" date, and significant changes may additionally be announced in the app.
